Excavation carried out at Qubbet el-Hawa demonstrates that the site offers and archaeological sequence spanning from the 6th Dynasty to the Middle Ages, including the existence of a large necropolis that almost completely occupies the hill across different Egyptian periods and phases. This article presents the most recent archaeological achievements and offers the edition of two Coptic ostraca and one inscription.

El papiro P.Oxy. 3.413, un gran fragmento conservado hoy en la biblioteca Bodleiana, contiene una parte importante de un mimo conocido como Caritión. Este texto presenta una serie de temas de interés para la homenajeada, tanto de orden lingüístico como de orden religioso. de ellos hemos elegido presentar aquí los recursos utilizados para describir al «otro». En este mimo aparecen unos personajes que son caracterizados como indios mediante dos recursos: el uso de la lengua y la transposición de características dionisíacas por la creencia en que el dios dioniso conquistó la India en un tiempo mítico. A modo de apéndice, ofrecemos al final una traducción al castellano de este divertido mimo, basada en el texto de Grenfell y Hunt, con una revisión del propio papiro en imagen digital y un comentario de algunas de las facetas más interesantes del texto.

Based on a presentation at the American Philosophical Society's Member Meeting in April 2023, this brief essay focuses on how ancient magic was compiled and transmitted. Previous studies of a body of ancient texts on magic focused on their textual and linguistic content. However, a focus on materiality offers new perspectives for the study of the circulation of magical books and the transmission of knowledge through the work of scribes in the production of books. Considering materiality leads to questions such as: How were these books produced? Who produced them and why were specific recipes and prescriptions collected in books? Who were their readers? This large and well-preserved corpus of papyri provides a laboratory to explore scribal experience and the materiality of ancient compilations. It offers, in other words, a window into the transmission of ancient technical knowledge, which may teach us something about magical texts, but also about other fields, like medicine, pharmacology, liturgy, and even cuisine.

Se trata de un libro electrónico editado en formato CD que contiene estudios específicos de diferentes especialistas sobre la relación del hombre con el Más Allá en varias de las culturas que se extienden desde la India hasta el Mediterráneo, en un marco temporal que abarca desde la Antigüedad hasta la Edad Media. Los estudios referentes al mundo clásico, gozan de una mayor presencia, y van desde la comparación en la literatura griega arcaica con el levante mediterráneo, las laminillas órficas, los papiros griegos mágicos, hasta la época romana y cristiana en Egipto. Cierran el volumen otras perspectivas, la de la cultura Eslava y la de la India. This is an e-book published in CD format, containing specific case studies by various specialists on the relationship between man and the afterlife in various cultures, from India to the Mediterranean, over a time frame ranging from antiquity down to the middle ages. The bulk of the studies concern the classical world, taking in a comparison of archaic Greek literature with that of the Levant, the Orphic lamellae, magical papyri Greek, to the Roman and Christian epoch in Egypt. The volume ends with two different perspectives, namely those of Slavic culture and of India.

Como resultado del Seminario Internacional Complutense “Edición de Textos Mágicos de la Antigüedad y la Edad Media”, celebrado entre los días 2 y 4 de junio de 2005 en Madrid y Toledo, ve ahora la luz una selección de las comunicaciones presentadas en aquel coloquio. El objetivo de aquella reunión científica era debatir sobre los avances que se han producido en los últimos años sobre un aspecto muy difícil de la Filología dedicada a lenguas antiguas, la edición de textos mágicos. La abundancia de testimonios escritos relacionados con la magia en las culturas del Mediterráneo y aledañas es prueba de su enorme extensión, y como únicos testigos de su práctica, nos aportan un complejo mensaje a menudo inextricable y un auténtico reto para su interpretación desde nuestros días.

El control de la población se convirtió en un problema de peso ya en la antigüedad tardía. Los documentos de Egipto en el periodo tardoantiguo y justo tras la conquista islámica son testimonio de los esfuerzos de las autoridades para controlar al colonado, fundamentalmente por razones fiscales. El recién establecido gobierno islámico adoptó un sistema que estaba empezando a tomar forma en los últimos siglos del Imperio. El control de los fugitivos adquirió con éste una refinada organización, que se refleja tanto en las fuentes literarias como en las documentales. The control of the population became a significant problem already in Late Antiquity. The documents from Egypt from the late Roman period and the first period after the Islamic conquest attest to the efforts of the authorities to control the colonate, mainly for fiscal reasons. The newly established Islamic power adopted the system which had only begun to take shape in the last centuries of Roman rule. The control of the fugitives acquired a refined organisation, reflected both in the literary and the documentary sources.

Esta contribución examina el uso léxico en las escenas egipcias de la versión griega del Antiguo Testamento, y en concreto, la reacción de Filón de Alejandría a dicho uso. Para este fin, se han seleccionado tres escenas de carácter egipcio, la del sueño de las siete vacas, la del jarrillo de plata y la del nacimiento de Moisés. En estos tres pasajes, el texto griego de los Setenta utiliza préstamos léxicos de origen egipcio. Tanto Filón, como las otras versiones griegas del Antiguo Testamento los evitan, mientras que los posteriores autores cristianos los respetan. Palabras clave: Filón de Alejandría, Setenta, Septuaginta, préstamos léxicos, lengua egipcia This contribution examines the lexical usage in the Egyptian scenes of the Greek version of the Old Testament, and specifically, Philo of Alexandria's reaction to such usage. For this purpose, three “Egyptian” scenes have been selected, that of the dream of the seven cows, that of the silver vase, and that of the birth of Moses. In these three passages, the Greek text of the Septuagint uses lexical borrowings of Egyptian origin. Both Philo and the other Greek versions of the Old Testament avoid them, while later Christian authors respect them.

The magical formularies on papyrus are precious witnesses to practices and processes of cultural transmission: i.e. the creation, communication, transformation and preservation of knowledge, both in text and image, across history and between the cultures of Egypt and Greece. More than eighty such handbooks survive, some of them in a fragmentary state. Our book, the work of an international team of papyrologists and historians of magic, replaces Papyri graecae magicae edited by K. Preisendanz, which appeared almost a century ago and has been used as one of the most important sources for the study of Greek magic, augmented in the 1990s by the excellent work of R. Daniel and F. Maltomini, the Supplementum Magicum. Our project has collected all the known magical formularies and fully studied both their materiality and their texts. The facing English translation with notes replaces The Greek Magical Papyri in Translation, edited by H.D. Betz. This volume, the first of two, presents the earliest of the handbooks, fifty-four in all, spanning the period from second century BCE to third century CE, in a new edition which includes the original texts in the three languages (Greek, Demotic, Coptic) with a full material description and a facing translation with commentary.
