Description
In response to an inquiry regarding his profession, Einstein once quipped that he was "an artist's model," reflecting the frequency with which he was asked to be the subject of a sculpture or painting. The contents of this folder include correspondence and other documentation that support Einstein's reply -- including a portrait (by Bette F. Havill) undertaken under the auspices of the Institute for Advanced Study. On another occasion, Einstein was said to have amended this remark to "photographer's model," and some of the many portrayals of Einstein in these various artistic media can be viewed at the Institute's Digital Collections pages (http://cdm.itg.ias.edu/cdm/). Some folders in the Director's Office Faculty files series include a processing note with the heading "Items Removed." These removed items are now located in the offprint collection of the Institute's Historical Studies-Social Science Library.
