Albert Einstein -- Missing Papers , 1969-1971

After Albert Einstein's death in 1955, the Institute played a role in the work of organizing and maintaining his papers through its support of Einstein's longtime secretary, Helen Dukas. She had an office on the Institute campus, and the papers were also stored on the campus. When Dukas died in 1982, the papers were, in accordance with Einstein's will, given to The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. This folder of correspondence and other materials addresses the issue of documents that went missing after a researcher was given access to the papers. At the time of these events, Carl Kaysen was the Director of the Institute. Some folders in the Director's Office Faculty files series include a processing note with the heading "Items Removed." These removed items are now located in the offprint collection of the Institute's Historical Studies-Social Science Library.
