Description
This portion of the Faculty file contains correspondence chiefly between the Institute's Founding Director, Abraham Flexner, and economist Winfield W. Riefler. Riefler was a vitally important partner to Flexner in establishing economics as an academic field pursued by the Institute. This interest grew out of various impulses and influences, including the decade-long worldwide economic depression that began in 1929, and was realized with the creation of the Institute's second school: the School of Economics and Politics. In addition to correspondence, this file also contains documents by Riefler discussing the work in economics that he intends for himself and the School. Some folders in the Director's Office Faculty files series include a processing note with the heading "Items Removed." These removed items are now located in the offprint collection of the Institute's Historical Studies-Social Science Library.
