dc.description Reproduction of a silhouette made by Albert Einstein depicting himself, his second wife, Elsa, and Elsa's two daughters, Ilse and Margot, whom Albert adopted. Albert and Elsa were married the same year Einstein made this piece: 1919. Albert's handwritten notations on this piece include initials for each person under their silhouetted figure, Einstein's initials in the lower right, and a poem in the upper right. The text of the poem and a word next to Einstein's initials are not entirely legible. The text in German frakturs beneath the silhouette reads: Peterchens Mondfahrt, which is the title of a German children's classic, Peterkin's Journey to the Moon. One source says that the silhouette was glued to the title page of a copy of that book, which was given as a Christmas present to a child of friends of the Einstein family.
