From right in foreground, award winner Alexander Gavrilov and Institute Director Phillip Griffiths are among those attending the presentation in Berlin of the first New Europe Prize for Higher Education and Research. There were two recipients of the award, which was part of an initiative by a group of six scholarly institutes in Europe and the United States (including the Institute for Advanced Study) to encourage the establishment of similar institutes in the countries of Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. Gavrilov was a Member of the Institute's School of Historical Studies during the 1991-1992 academic year. School of Historical Studies Faculty member Peter Paret is just visible in the second row behind Griffiths.
