Portrait of a woman

This formal portrait of an unidentified woman is inscribed in German to Albert Einstein and his second wife, Elsa, in the lower right corner of the green paper mat framing the photographic print. Legible portions of the inscription suggest that the image was sent by a close friend, and the signer, "Alice," may be Alice Hopf, who was the wife of physicist Ludwig Hopf, a colleague of Einstein's. The photographic print is adhered back-to-back to another photograph, EB 234-verso, in the collection. The name, Rose Weiser, at the bottom left of the "Alice" side of the two attached images may be the photographer of the "Alice" image or may relate to the photograph on the other side. There is evidence that Rose Weiser was the name of professional photographer in Berlin, Germany, working at a time contemporary to when this photograph was taken.
