Craig Hugh Smyth speaking at a symposium held from October 1-3, 1993, at the Institute for Advanced Study entitled -- Meaning in the Visual Arts: Views from the Outside: A Centennial Commemoration of Erwin Panofsky (1892-1968). The symposium was organized by School of Historical Studies Faculty member Irving Lavin and featured speakers on anthropology, history, literature, science, music and film. Erwin Panofsky was on the Faculty of the School of Historical Studies from 1935 until his death in 1968.
