Symposium organizer Irving Lavin (l.) speaking with Craig Hugh Smyth at the Institute for Advanced Study gathering held from October 1-3, 1993, entitled -- Meaning in the Visual Arts: Views from the Outside: A Centennial Commemoration of Erwin Panofsky (1892-1968). School of Historical Studies Faculty member Lavin organized the event, which featured speakers on anthropology, history, literature, science, music and film. Erwin Panofsky was on the Faculty of the School of Historical Studies from 1935 until his death in 1968.
