Description
Presentation in Berlin of the first New Europe Prize for Higher Education and Research. There were two recipients of the award, which was part of an initiative by a group of six scholarly institutes in the United States (including the Institute for Advanced Study) and Europe to encourage the establishment of other such institutes in the countries of Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. Beginning sixth from the left are Institute Director Phillip Griffiths and award winners Alexander Gavrilov and Andre Pleșu. Gavrilov was a Member of the Institute's School of Historical Studies during the 1991-1992 academic year.
