- The Register consists currently of four leather-bound volumes. The first volume includes signatures from the dates 1933-1970; the second, 1970-1984; and the third, 1984-2000. A fourth volume, 2000-present, is currently in use in the Director's office.

Historical note
The Register was first signed in 1933. The first page of the first volume of the Register holds the signatures of the Trustees of the Institute for Advanced Study. Since that time, the Register has been signed by the directors, faculty, members, and visitors of the Institute, but typically not by the Trustees, staff, and guests. New members of the Institute community are asked to sign the book during their first year, and some individuals have signed more than once - for example, when a former member has returned as faculty.
The fourth and current volume is located in the office of the Director, where the Register has been kept since the 1930s. Prior to the construction of Fuld Hall, the Register was kept by Esther Bailey, assistant to the Director and Assistant Secretary for the Board of Trustees, in Abraham Flexner's office at 20 Nassau St in Princeton, New Jersey.

The Register of the Institute for Advanced Study holds the signatures of the Institute's Directors, Faculty, Members, and Visitors.

Administrative records of the Institute are closed for 30 years from the date of creation. In addition, letters of recommendation are closed until the death of both the author and the subject of the recommendation.
