There were two recipients of the award, which was part of an initiative by a group of six scholarly institutes in Europe and the United States (including the Institute for Advanced Study) to encourage the establishment of similar institutes in the countries of Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. Gavrilov was a Member of the Institute's School of Historical Studies during the 1991-1992 academic year.
