Robert Oppenheimer by Freeman Dyson shortly after his arrival at the Institute in 1948. Oppenheimer initially expressed deep resistance to Dyson's work on quantum electrodynamics, which drew on the ideas of Richard Feynman, Julian Schwinger, and Shinichiro Tomonaga. Oppenheimer eventually conceded his position with a small piece of paper left in Dyson's mailbox with the handwritten words, "Nolo contendere. R.O."This document is protected by copyright and/or related rights.
