There were two recipients of the award, which was part of an initiative by a group of six scholarly institutes in the United States (including the Institute for Advanced Study) and Europe to encourage the establishment of other such institutes in the countries of Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. Beginning sixth from the left are Institute Director Phillip Griffiths and award winners Alexander Gavrilov and Andre Pleșu.
