Scope and Contents
Director’s Office: Miscellaneous correspondence also includes offprints, photographs, and other materials sometimes accompanying these letters to and from the Director's Office, which are arranged alphabetically by the name of the sender or the person who is the subject of the correspondence. The contents largely represent the tenures of the Directors J. Robert Oppenheimer, Abraham Flexner, Frank Aydelotte, and Carl Kaysen.
While the most critical Institute business isn't featured in this series, and it includes individuals who make unconventional or unsubstantiated claims, it does provide an expansive sense of the Institute's interactions with a wide variety of individuals of all ages and levels of accomplishment, both within the United States and internationally. These interactions suggest how the Institute is perceived in both public and academic realms. Replies from the Institute summarize policies and procedures, some routine, but other not. Items of interest listed in the finding aid call attention to some of the highlights.
Arrangement
Correspondence is grouped by range of dates and arranged chronologically by correspondent's name thereunder. Correspondence dated 1923-1971 appears in the first series, in boxes 1-4. A second series of correspondence, the bulk of which is dated 1967-1973, is in boxes 5 and 6. A last series of letters dated 1973-1974 is in box 6.

Conditions Governing Access
Administrative records of the Institute are closed for 30 years from the date of creation. In addition, letters of recommendation are closed until the death of both the author and the subject of the recommendation. In the instance of this record group, neither of these restrictions is expected to apply.
Custodial History
These records wer transferred from the Director's Office early in the history of the establishment of the Institute Archives. Preliminary processing work by Archives staff included the creation of bibliographic records for the first eight folders in the Horizon database.
Related Materials
Related Archival Materials
Additional materials concerning some of the individuals in Miscellaneous correspondence will be found in the other subgroups of the Director's Office, including Faculty and Members.
Archival material from more recent Director tenures is typically organized by provenance (i.e. Director's Office: Phillip Griffiths). Additional material from the tenure of J. Robert Oppenheimer is especially represented in the Director's Office: General Files subgroup.
