Biographical note
Widely regarded as one of the world’s greatest analytic number theorists, Norwegian mathematician Atle Selberg was appointed Professor in the School of Mathematics at the Institute for Advanced Study in 1951. He was Professor Emeritus from 1987 until his death in 2007.
Throughout a career spanning more than six decades, Selberg made significant contributions to modular forms, Riemann and other zeta functions, analytic number theory, sieve methods, discrete groups, and trace formula. The impact of his work is evident from the many mathematical terms that bear his name: the Selberg Trace Formula, the Selberg Sieve, the Selberg Integral, the Selberg Class, the RankinSelberg LFunction, the Selberg Eigenvalue Conjecture, and the Selberg Zeta Function.
Arrangement note
The collection is arranged into four series: Professional Correspondence; Institute Business; Mathematical Papers; and Photographs.

Conditions Governing Access note
All material listed is available for research. Additional material is still closed pending review per the donor agreement.
Custodial History note
The bulk of papers were retrieved from Atle Selberg's home and office at the Institute by Dennis Hejhal after Selberg's death in 2007. They were formally donated to the Institute by Betty Compton Selberg in 2009, with the condition that the mathematical papers be reviewed by Dennis Hejhal and Peter Sarnak prior to making them public. Seven cartons of mathematical papers were cleared for public access in July 2012. A small amount of additional material was donated by Betty Compton Selberg in 2012.
Processing Information note
Two boxes of professional correspondence and Institute administrative materials were formally transferred to the Archives and processed in 2009. As there was little organization originally, materials were rehoused in standard archival containers and arranged alphabetically by correspondent or chronologically by year. The Photographs series was processed in 2012. Seven cartons of the mathematical papers were cleared for public access in 2012. Physical processing was done by Dennis Hejhal between 20072012, during the process of clearing the materials for public access.

Symposium in honor of Atle Selberg (The University of Oslo) June 1520, 1987 10.0 VHS General noteIn the summer of 2018, some of those involved in the processing of the Selberg Papers, including Dennis Hejhal, expressed interest in making the Selberg Symposium tapes accessible from the Institute's website. Archives staff found a vendor for this process, who reported that the finished files are from 1.2 to 1.5 GB each with all ten tapes totaling 14.1 GB. The vendor also notes that the conversion was done at medium quality only, because the original recordings are plain VHS tapes which have only 200300 vertical lines of resolution, so a higher quality digital file would produce a very large digital file without improving the viewing experience. Each tape was therefore converted at a resolution of approximately 640 (width) x 480 (height) pixels. Scope and Contents noteThese recordings represent some of the lectures presented at this Symposium. All 30 lectures were published in: "Number Theory, Trace Formulas and Discrete Groups: Symposium in Honor of Atle Selberg / Oslo, Norway, July 1421, 1987" edited by K.E. Aubert, E. Bombieri, and D. Goldfeld (Academic Press, 1989). Related Archival Materials noteFour additional VHS tapes from this event are located in the Audiovisual Collection material. The content of those VHS tapes appear to fill in some gaps in the Selberg Papers set of 10 tapes, though a quick glance at the labels gives the appearance that the content is the same. All of these VHS tapes were numbered by whoever originally produced them. The 10 VHS tapes in the Selberg Papers are numbered 110. The 4 VHS tapes in the Audiovisual Collection are numbers 1, 2, 6, and 8. However, it appears that asterisks next to some speaker names on the labels on the physical media indicates that the person with the asterisk is featured on the tape. So the complete list represents a particular day of the Symposium, and even, perhaps, some portion of that day, but that particular VHS recording features select presenters from that list as indicated by the asterisks.
