Scope and Contents note

The Director’s Office: Faculty files series contains files maintained by the Director's Office on past faculty members. Faculty files are transferred to the Archives when IAS professors resign their positions at the Institute, or upon their deaths; files for current professors and living emeriti are retained by the Director's office. Individuals who were offered, and declined, professorships at IAS are represented in this series. Also included is former IAS Director Harry Woolf.

Faculty files typically include administrative materials including documentation of professors' appointments. They may also include documentation predating or postdating an individual's professorship at IAS.

General note

In 1933, Flexner asked Woodward to put in writing his assessment of how the humanities could best be pursued at the Institute. Woodward's 16-page document in response to that request, and related correspondence, is included in this file. There is also an Oct. 20, 1950, letter from Earle to Oppenheimer referencing the 1933 memo.
