Historical note

Though the School of Natural Sciences was not established until December 1965, the disciplines explored by the School have always played an essential role in the intellectual scope of the Institute for Advanced Study. Work in the natural sciences began in 1933 when theoretical physicist Albert Einstein accepted the second appointment to the Institute’s Faculty. Einstein was placed under the administrative umbrella of the Institute's first School, the School of Mathematics, as were scholars representing select branches of physics, biology, chemistry, and meteorology in later years. Initially, visiting scholars in the natural sciences chiefly represented theoretical physics, and included distinguished names in the field such as Niels Bohr, Paul Adrien Maurice Dirac, Wolfgang Pauli, Isidore I. Rabi, and Max von Laue. Abraham Flexner, the Institute’s first Director, reflected on this choice of intellectual direction as one that the modest means of the Institute might influence as theoretical physics was "undeveloped in this country."

The natural sciences entered a period of growth at the Institute with the appointment in 1947 of theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer as the third Director. As Director and a Faculty member (concurrent service which had no precedent at the Institute), Oppenheimer immediately drew together a group of physicists to work with him on an informal basis. By 1950, he had added one physicist, Abraham Pais, to the Faculty. In 1951, Oppenheimer established the Committee on Physics Appointments, which served until 1965 as a mechanism for identifying and recruiting scholars to join the Institute community.

By 1954, Oppenheimer declared that "there has been a marked growth in the work of the Institute in theoretical physics," which included the addition in 1953 of theoretical physicist Freeman Dyson to the Faculty. Physicists with "arrangements for a continuing or recurrent association with the Institute" included Bohr, Dirac, and Pauli, as well as: Res Jost, George Placzek, Léon Van Hove and Chen Ning Yang (who joined the Faculty in 1955). Oppenheimer also described seminars of two kinds: one ongoing on "problems of high current interest” and the other focusing on a “single theme."

In 1955, Oppenheimer applauded work in the natural sciences, including meteorology, which was undertaken through the Electronic Computer Project, but asserted that since that work was undertaken on behalf of outside entities, it did not expand and strengthen the intellectual base of the ongoing work of the Institute. Oppenheimer stated "if a program in applied mathematics (or applied physics) is to continue, it should be endowed and expanded, and should take its proper place in the academic structure; otherwise we shall be left with a decapitated and inferior project." Oppenheimer added that: "...work in the theoretical sciences could be extended to include applied mathematical physics, astrophysics, psychology, and biology, without the addition of major laboratory facilities."

The natural sciences were also among the central issues addressed by the "Report of the Joint Faculty-Trustee Study Committee" (May, 1956). Topics included the growing divide between mathematics and physics, and that though the Institute lacked laboratories, subjects such as biology and chemistry could be explored with "temporary memberships," which the report says would be "encouraged." Partially in response, the Institute appointed its first astrophysicist to the Faculty by the end of 1957: Bengt Strömgren.

Under Oppenheimer’s leadership, additional sources for funding in the natural sciences were vigorously pursued, with the National Science Foundation (NSF) and other government agencies among the most reliable. In the mid-1960s, the Institute developed an initiative to support 2-year memberships, along with its standard 5-year memberships in these fields.

In 1965, "The Director reported that, with the concurrence of the faculty in both Mathematics and Physics, there would be in the future a complete separation of Mathematics and Physics for administrative and budgetary purposes. The new name for the division of Physics will be the School of Natural Sciences." Disciplines represented by Members and Faculty included particle physics, astrophysics, plasma physics, and hydrodynamics, with mention of adding more scholars to the roster, in particular in particle physics. High-energy physicists Stephen Adler and Roger F. Dashen were given 5-year appointments this same year. They were both appointed to the Faculty in 1969, as was Marshall N. Rosenbluth, a leading theorist in plasma physics, in 1967.

The appointment in 1971 of astrophysicist John Bahcall, in particular, signaled recognition that the Institute would need to set aside the strict dictum of founding IAS Director Abraham Flexner's perspective on experimental physics as a field that the Institute "need not touch." Strict boundaries could no longer be drawn without losing considerable ground and influence. Though the Institute was not in a position, by virtue of overall mission and limited resources, to provide the laboratories and other facilities necessary to conduct experimental research, relationships between SNS scholars and institutions with such facilities would become commonplace and essential. Bahcall’s long-term work with the Hubble Space Telescope is one such example.

The SNS then entered a period of stability in terms of Faculty that would last into the 1980s, though the number and intellectual breadth of visiting scholars was vital and growing. The Institute for Advanced Study Annual Report for 1978-79 summarizes the work of the SNS at this time:

"Bounded by design and tradition as well as by budgetary realities, the School has come to concentrate on three fundamental areas: the physics of the very small (meaning elementary particle physics, high energy physics and field theory), the physics of the very large (astrophysics and general relativity) and the physics of very complex finite systems (statistical mechanics and the many-body problem as well as plasma physics)."

The total Faculty held steady at six until mid-way into the first decade of the new millennium when the number rose to seven, and then nine by 2010, chiefly representing the fields of astrophysics, particle physics, and systems biology (the first to represent the field was Martin Nowak in 1998). The number of visiting scholars has increased since the early decades from a handful to 40 to 50. The School continues to support multi-year Memberships in most fields, and also invites scholars to visit for shorter periods of time to participate in workshops, conferences, and other special events. A strong relationship between the Schools of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has continued into the present.

A research group devoted to molecular biology and its interaction with the physical sciences was formed within the School in 2003. Renamed the Simons Center for Systems Biology in 2005 in recognition of a gift from the Simons Foundation, the Center hosts frequent conferences, symposia, and seminars, as well as one- and two-year memberships and short-term visits. The Center also participates in collaborative work with academic, clinical, and industrial groups outside the Institute.

Meeting Minutes and School Information 1951-1983   0.5 linear feet

Scope and Contents note

The Meeting Minutes and School Information series (1951-1983) includes materials that pre- and postdate the establishment of the School. The early material spans the years 1951-1965, and is comprised of memoranda for what is variously called the: Committee on Physics Appointments in the School of Mathematics, Faculty Committee on Physics Appointments, Physics Faculty, or Faculty in Physics. These materials chiefly report the results of meetings on the subjects of scholar selection and allocation of funding. On average, meetings took place five times per year, but were held as few as once and as many as nine times.

The remainder of the series consists of minutes that begin after the School of Natural Sciences was founded, and date from 1966-1983. These minutes continue to focus on scholar appointments and allocation of funding, as well as administrative matters that arose once the School was established as an independent entity. Initially, the number of meetings per year varied greatly (as few as one to as many as eight times). By the mid-1970s, the meetings settled into a more predictable pattern of four times per year, with some minor variations.

People 1933-1968   2.5 linear feet

Scope and Contents note

The People series spans the years 1933-1968, with the bulk dating from 1934-1965, which predates the School’s establishment as an independent entity in December of 1965. Members comprise the bulk of the people represented, and include both accepted and rejected applicants. Documentation includes letters of inquiry, membership application forms, letters of recommendation, and administrative details. Other categories of Institute affiliation represented in this series are: Faculty (prior to Faculty appointment), Director, Assistant, Visitor, and Permanent Member. Documentation for these categories of individuals varies, but usually includes administrative correspondence.

Individuals represented in the series are primarily scholars in the fields of the natural sciences. Some Electronic Computer Project (ECP) scholars are also found in this series. As well, some early scholars in the field of psychology (predating the establishment of the School of Social Science) are found in this series.

A small amount of other correspondence is found in the series, including with non- Institute scholars in the fields of the natural sciences, and with organizations, such as the American Institute of Physics and the American Philosophical Society.
