Biographical note

Dorothy Morgenstern Thomas (1917-2008) was the wife of Oskar Morgenstern (1902-1977), a German-born economist who came to the United States in 1938 where he took up an academic post at Princeton University. Oskar Morgenstern befriended others in the European emigré community, including Kurt Gödel with whom he had a close relationship.

Kurt Gödel (1906-1978) was a logician, mathematician, and philosopher born in Austria-Hungary who emigrated to the United States in 1940, where he was affiliated with the Institute for Advanced Study's School of Mathematics first as a Member and later as Faculty.

Scope and Contents note

The Dorothy Morgenstern Thomas collection consists of one letter, one document, and two photographs. The document is a four-page account written by Oskar Morgenstern in 1971 recalling highlights of Kurt Gödel's preparation for his naturalization interview and the interview itself in Trenton, New Jersey in 1947. Oskar Morgensten and Albert Einstein were the two people who accompanied Gödel to the interview. The two photographs are in slide format. One is of Kurt and his wife Adele in the backyard of their home and the other is of Gödel with The Reverend E.A. Conway, S.J., of Creighton University.
