Biographical note
Marianne Iceland (1912-1998), was the wife of Ben Iceland.
Albert Einstein (1879-1955) was a theoretical physicist. He was affiliated with the Institute for Advanced Study's School of Mathematics from 1932-1955.
Josef Scharl (1896-1954) was a Munich-born artist. He and Albert Einstein met in Berlin in 1927. Both were forced, due to the political climate in Europe, into exile. Various factors, including proximity (Scharl settled in New York and Einstein in New Jersey) brought them together, and they developed a close relationship.
Scope and Contents note
The Marianne Iceland collection dates chiefly from 1941-1954. Some material in the collection is undated. The majority of the collection consists of handwritten and typed letters in German from Albert Einstein to Josef Scharl.
Other materials represented in the collection include letters from Albert Einstein's sister, Maja (a.k.a. Maria), to Josef Scharl, a funeral address for Josef Scharl by Albert Einstein, and a telegram and postcard to Josef Scharl. Other correspondents include two members of the Einstein extended family: his stepdaughter, Margot, and secretary, Helena Dukas.

Custodial History note
A handwritten note by Marianne Iceland attached to Einstein's funeral address for Josef Scharl suggests a personal relationship between Mrs. Iceland and Einstein. The collection also features a handwritten note by Iceland describing the bulk of the materials, but it does not explain how she came to have them in her possession. In 2000, after Iceland's death, the materials were given to the Institute for Advanced Study in accordance with the instructions in her Last Will and Testament.
